Portfolio summary

This portfolio of student work shows that the student analyses how the Periodic Table organises elements and can explain how it can be used to make predictions about the properties of elements (WS6). The student can explain how different factors influence the rate of reactions (WS1). The student applies the concept of energy conservation and represents energy transfer and transformation within systems (WS2). The student evaluates the evidence for scientific theories that explain the origin of the universe (WS5) and the diversity of life on Earth (WS3, WS4). The student explains the processes that underpin evolution (WS4). The student can explain the processes that underpin heredity and evolution (WS7). The student analyses how the models and theories they use have developed over time and discusses the factors that prompted their review (WS4, WS5).

The student develops questions and hypotheses and independently designs and improves appropriate methods of investigation, including laboratory experimentation (WS1, WS2, WS7). The student explains how they have considered reliability, safety and fairness in their methods (WS1) and identifies where digital technologies can be used to enhance the quality of data (WS1). When analysing data, selecting evidence and developing and justifying conclusions, the student explains any sources of uncertainty (WS1, WS7). The student evaluates the validity and reliability of claims made in secondary sources with reference to currently held scientific views and the quality of the evidence cited (WS3, WS5). The student constructs evidence-based arguments and selects appropriate representations and text types to communicate science ideas for specific purposes (WS1, WS2, WS3, WS4, WS5, WS6, WS7).
