Portfolio summary

This portfolio of student work shows that the student can use the particle model to explain and predict the properties and behaviours of substances (WS1). The student identifies different forms of energy and describes how energy transfers and transformations cause change in simple systems (WS2). The student compares processes of rock formation (WS3, WS4), including the timescales involved (WS3). The student analyses the relationship between structure and function at cell, organ and body system levels (WS5, WS6). The student examines the different science knowledge used in occupations (WS7). The student explains how evidence has led to an improved understanding of a scientific idea (WS7) and describes situations in which scientists collaborated to generate solutions to contemporary problems (WS7). The student reflects on implications of these solutions for different groups in society (WS7).

The student identifies and constructs questions and problems that they can investigate scientifically (WS1). The student considers safety when planning investigations, including designing experimental methods (WS1, WS3). The student identifies variables to be changed, measured and controlled (WS1, WS2, WS3). The student constructs representations of their data to reveal and analyse patterns and trends, and uses these when justifying their conclusions (WS1, WS2, WS3, WS8). The student explains how modifications to methods could improve the quality of their data (WS1, WS2, WS3, WS8) and applies their own scientific knowledge and investigation findings to evaluate claims made by others (WS8). The student uses appropriate language and representations to communicate science ideas, methods and findings in a range of text types (WS1, WS2, WS3, WS4, WS5, WS6, WS7, WS8).
