Yokine Primary School

Summary

Yokine Independent Public Primary School is situated ten kilometres from Perth CBD. The school profile has changed significantly over the last seven years with an increased enrolment of students for whom English is an Additional Language or Dialect (EAL/D).The school identified writing as a priority, and used the English Curriculum as an entry point to develop a Foundation to Year 6 writing scope and sequence. The process provided a strong professional development platform for the staff. The school also established a dedicated curriculum manager role to facilitate the various aspects of change required with the implementation of the Australian Curriculum.

Yokine Primary School created a strategic plan for the implementation of the Australian Curriculum, starting with the strengths of the school. At school entry, the teachers incorporated the play-based focus of the Early Years Framework with explicit teaching as a strategy to assist EAL/D learners. The open-ended tasks and play-based learning have increased the students’ literacy skills and their ability to use the skills across learning areas.
The achievement standards provide the school with the benchmark for student achievement. Time is allocated for teachers to plan together, develop common assessment tasks and collect data, while moderating student achievement. Teachers use the Australian Curriculum to differentiate the learning for all students.

Yokine Primary is a metropolitan school in Perth and at the time of filming had 278 students. 47 per cent of the students have English as an Additional Language or Dialect, with families coming from a diverse range of cultures. There are 22 teaching and 14 non-teaching staff. There are dedicated science, language other than English (LOTE) and music specialist teachers. Yokine Primary School has a clear direction to deliver innovative and evidence-based education through the Australian Curriculum. The need to engage all parties, with the school’s direction, with the new curriculum is paramount and as a consequence the school has developed a Professional Learning Community and ensures open and transparent communications with the whole school community.
