St Stephen's School, Duncraig

Summary

St Stephen’s School, Duncraig, is situated 15 kilometres north of Perth. At the time of filming, St Stephen’s Duncraig had 548 students, with the Early Years Learning Framework integrated into the pedagogy of the primary school. The general capabilities and cross-curriculum priorities of The Australian Curriculum provide links across the curriculum building meaning for students. Staff have developed confidence with the Australian Curriculum and work collaboratively, integrating different learning areas into enquiry units.

The journey using the Australian Curriculum has involved developing trust and distributed leadership among staff. The Australian Curriculum has provided a common language and moderation; using the achievement standards and work samples ensures common goals for students. Teams of teachers plan units of work and can include the literacy coordinator, teacher librarian, gifted and talented coordinator, class teachers and the digital learning specialist. Using “Curriculum on a page”, formatted by the Australian Independent Schools (AIS) Western Australia, the teachers choose content descriptions, which can be integrated and incorporate the big ideas of the curriculum, to develop enquiry questions for their students. Referencing the achievement standards, the teachers develop learning intentions for each learning area. Rich assessment is developed by the staff to enable students to demonstrate their knowledge and skills.

St Stephen's School is a Uniting Church co-educational school in Western Australia with two campuses for Pre-Primary – Year 12 at Carramar and Duncraig. The schools mission is: "Working together as a Christian community in the Uniting Church tradition to inspire learning that transforms and empowers lives". The school seeks to provide an environment that encourages young people to become self-confident, respectful of others, enquiring of mind, equipped for life-long learning and committed to serve in the community. Linking with the Early Years Learning Framework, there is an emphasis on flexible learning spaces, colour and movement of the learning environments.
